Camper Repair: RV Maintenance Between Trips

camper repair

Even the most avid RV-ers need to take a break between trips. When you’re ready to park your camper for a bit while you plan your next adventure, you still need to keep up with maintenance and repairs. Routine maintenance between trips will ensure your camper is in good repair and ready to hit the road as soon as you are.

Here is a list of basic camper repair needs and maintenance tasks you should perform between trips.

Clean the Exterior

Keeping your camper clean will prevent rust and corrosion while it’s not in use. Wash the exterior of your RV to remove dirt, grime, salt, or anything else it picked up on the road. For good measure, wax the exterior to further protect it from corrosion. As you’re cleaning, check the seals around the windows and doors for cracks or tears.

Check the Tires and Brakes

After a long road trip, your tires could be a little worse for wear. Check the tread depth and pressure, including on the spare tire. Your brakes also did a lot of work, bringing a large vehicle to a stop many times throughout the trip. Inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear and replace them if necessary. You should also flush the brake fluid and then test the brakes to ensure they are working properly.

Service the Engine

No matter how long you go between trips, you should always service the engine when you return. Routine oil and filter changes will ensure the engine of your camper stays in good repair. You should also check the coolant and top it off if it’s below the recommended level. Check and replace your air filter and inspect the belts and hoses for cracks or tears.

Inspect the Plumbing and Appliances

RVs require more maintenance than other vehicles because they also house a plumbing system and several appliances. Start by checking for leaks in the plumbing and then testing the water pump. To prevent damage while the camper is unused, drain the water heater and flush the water lines. You should also test all your appliances to ensure they work, check the refrigerator for leaks, and clean the stove, oven, or any other cooking appliances to deter pests.

Winterize the RV

Finally, if you don’t use your RV during the winter months, you need to winterize it. Drain water from all systems to prevent freezing, and add antifreeze to the plumbing system.
